First edition, presentation copy of Thomas Mann's great work, inscribed in German, to Marianne Schmidt: "Für Marianne Schmidt. habe ich in diesem ihrem Exemplare des Doktor Faustus eine Anzahl kleiner errata verbessert, um ihr zum Dank für ihre besondere Anteilnahme, einen gewissen Vorteil vor anderen Lesern zu geben und füge meine besten Wünsche hinzu. Pacif. Palisades, Calif. 19. Sept. 1948 Thomas Mann."

During World War II, T. Mann took refuge in California. When he decided to make his first post-war trip to Europe in 1947, he was aided by Marianne Schmidt, who was the personal assitant of Lennart Bernadotte, Count of Wisborg, the only son of Prince Wilhelm of Sweden. His Faustus was edited in Sweden. Marianne Schmidt visited him in California the next year and had this copy signed and corrected.
