Catalogue Note
One of the 10 out of trade copies, this copy 'C', printed for Amado Alonso, and inscribed with a sketch by by Lorca: "con la admiracion profunda y el cariño de Federico, Buenos Aires, 1934". Garcia Lorca illustrated the following page with an original drawing representing a crying clown, signed and dated: "Federico Garcia Lorca, 1934."
Amado Alonso's annotated copy. Alonso was a leading intellectual in Buenos Aires in the 1930s and 1940s a contemporary of Lorca, Neruda, and Borges. He is credited to evolving Spanish philology to literary criticism and textural analysis of intensely subjective poetry of the time. A Spanish expatriate in Buenos Aires, he published many essays on the Spanish language in addition to his books formailist literary criticism, including "El Problema de la lengua en America" (1935). In 1947, he and his family fled to Harvard to escape Peron.
