Chase"), Secretary of the Navy ("Gideon Welles, 28th Feby 1863"), Secretary of War ("Edwin M Stanton, Washington March 10, 1864"), and about 70 others, a mixture of personal acquaintances and military, political, and other notables, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Rear Admiral A. H. Foote, and Speaker of the House Schuyler Colfax of Indiana (vice president under Grant). 8vo album (7 3/4 x 5 1/4 in.; 196 x 134 mm), original blind-panelled morocco with central gilt emblem on front cover, yellow-coated endpapers, gilt edges; a bit shaken, binding worn with loss to spine, rear cover dampstained.
