Catalogue Note

first edition, from the collection of george brinley In 1811 Lawson was captured by Native Americans, who finally realized his surveying work inevitably led to more European settlement and their displacement. He was burned at the stake, becoming "the first victim of Indian vengeance" (Field, p.229).
