Catalogue Note

Copy 287 of 250 copies (numbered 251–500) of "Edition B" (of a whole edition of 600), signed by Hockney.  The artist's great series of etchings illustration the verse of Constantin Cavafy. The idea for the book was the artist's own and in early 1966 he visited Beirut "in order to seize the atmosphere of a city that matched the cosmopolitan quality of Cavafy's Alexandria.  The original conception proving over-ambitious, Hockney confined himself to illustrations from poems offering a celebration of homosexual love" (Manet to Hockney).
