Zola writes to G. Francolin to propose an essay about the novel as literary genre and about Gustave Flaubert in particular: “Voulez-vous, pour votre second numéro, une étude littéraire sur le roman en general et sur Flaubert en particulier? Cette étude tiendrait environ une vingtaine de page de votre Revue ».
Zola considered Flaubert to be his master. He wrote several essays about him. The first and second part of this essay were published in April and May 1877 in Le Bien Public and La Vie Litteraire. Zola proposes here that Francolin publish it entirely (and corrected) in the second number of the review, on the 15th of September, 1878. In a letter of the 23rd of September, 1878, Flaubert thanks Zola for his work: “Vous m’aviez communiqué en ms votre mirifique article paru le 15 dans la Réforme et j’en savais des phrases par cœur ! Tant ces phrases sont flatteuses. C’est aux riches qu’il convient d’être généreux. Re-merci donc encore une fois, mon bon vieux.”
