Description

  • lacquer (rhus verniciflua)
with canted incurved corners and shallow rounded sides, supported on a straight foot of corresponding shape, the interior elaborately carved with a scenery depicting a group of scholars sitting astride horses en route to a pavilion, their assistants carrying qin (zither) and other items around them, the landscape laden with verdant vegetation and rocky cliffs, the exterior with four dragons writhing sinuously above a petal lappet band, the base lacquered black

Condition

There are age cracks to the surface of the interior and underside. There are minute chips and losses to areas of the design, and a 0.5cm of infilling to a loss at the top right corner. The underside has a wrinkled texture, where the organic core of this Yunnanese lacquerware has been exposed due to dryness of the lacquer base.
