  • 66cm., 26 in. wide, 39cm., 15 3/8 in. high
modelled by Professor Max Esser, the animal lying recumbent looking slightly to its right, upon a flared pedestal base, crossed swords mark to the rear of base, to the underside of base, incised model number A.1089. and additional incised numeral L.230, impressed BOTTGER/STEINZEUG below a crossed swords mark, impressed numeral 23.

Condition

Shallow chip along edge of left ear, approx. 2cm length by 0.5cm at deepest point. Otherwise in good condition.

Catalogue Note

Max Esser (1885-1945) was a German sculptor. From 1900 to 1903 he attended the Unterrichtsanstalt Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin, under the schooling of animal sculptor August Gaul. Before working for Meissen, like his contemporary Paul Scheurich, Esser designed models for Schwarzburger Werkstätten für Porzellankunst in Unterweißbach. By September 1919 Esser was designing models for Meissen becoming Workshop Master in 1923.
