Catalogue Note
Daughter of Sir Marcus Samuel, 1stViscount Bearsted and one time Chairman of Shell, Nellie Ionides dedicated a large part of her life to collecting. She held a particular interest for Chinese porcelain, English furniture and prints. Led by her passion and her exacting eye, she sourced her pieces from renowned dealers, the auction floors and provincial shops. Her taste and connoisseurship as well as her great hospitality was well-known during her lifetime. The Chinese room in Buxted Park, Sussex, where the present lot was located, played host to numerous guests and parties where members of the social and political elite such as Winston and Lady Churchill and King George VI would have been in attendance. Her will stipulated that her collections should be left to the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum and her beloved corner of London – Twickenham, amongst others.
