Condition
In overall good conserved condition and ready to be placed. The base is integrally 19th century, whilst the upper section seems to comprise earlier elements, namely the drawers faces, in the tabernacle upper section and in central niche. There are paint losses to faux ivory painted filets. Obelisks and gallery finials with restorations; there are yellowing and craquelure to ivory and some handles are later replacements. The central niche seems to have had small round decorative elements, now missing.

Catalogue Note
This architectural cabinet of Baroque outline is decorated with ivory inlaid designs of allegorical and animal figures inspired by the published drawings by Athanasius Kircher and Johan Nieuhof. Its design is characteristic of South Germany in the Baroque period but also of the Lombardy region, where the interest for this type of furniture was revived in the 19th century.
