Catalogue Note

Rashid Effendi (d.1782)

Born in Konya, Rashid Effendi, better known as Ebubekir Rashid, was one of the leading Qur'an reciters of his era. He studied calligraphy under the supervision of Kazzazzade Seyyid Ahmed Effendi in Konya and Huseyin Habli Effendi in Istanbul.

Rashid lived modestly in a cell in the Nur-i Osmaniye Mosque in Istanbul. He was one of the esteemed calligraphers of the second half of the eighteenth century, particularly celebrated for his skill in thuluth and naskh scripts. He died in Istanbul in 1782.
