Description

the hinged drop front revealing eleven panels with nine drawers and ivory handles, the central one featuring a mother-of-pearl flowerhead design, decorated throughout with mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell alternating revetments in a stellar pattern on top and front and diamond trellis to sides

Condition

In overall good condition, the mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell bright, some repairs, including replacements to a couple of mother-of-pearl revetments, notably on interior around drawers, some minor ware as consistent with age and use, as viewed.

Catalogue Note

This exquisite table cabinet features a striking pattern of six-pointed mother-of-pearl stars between tortoiseshell hexagonal panels. This juxtaposition of materials and design is typical of Ottoman craftsmanship in the seventeenth/early eighteenth century and cabinets of such quality of decoration and workmanship were used by an elite group, including statesmen, scholars and calligraphers.
