leather-covered wood haft encased at either end with silver-gilt mounts incised with a foliate design, the bulbous head decorated with repoussé fluting and 'C' scrolls motifs surmounted with a floral terminal, tughra stamp to base of head

Catalogue Note

The ceremonial mace, which evolved from a functional weapon, was established as an Ottoman symbol of office by the sixteenth century. This particular mace is the one held by Edward Wortley Montagu in the oil painting by George Romney which was sold in these rooms on 9 July 2014, Old Master & British Paintings Evening Sale, lot 45. The mace was acquired by the 2nd Earl of Warwick with the portrait and has until recently been on loan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
