Catalogue Note

The present mirror case stands out in its inclusion, twice, of the renowned Christian scene of the Madonna and Child painted in a European fashion. An interesting comparison can be made with a casket in which the Biblical scenes lie at the centre of the composition in the Nasser D. Khalili Collection (N.D., Khalili; B.W., Robinson, T., Stanley, Lacquer of the Islamic World part 2, pp.34-35, no. 230).

For two further Qajar works of art featuring Biblical scenes, see lots 89 & 91 in the present sale.
