Catalogue Note

This painting comes from a distinctive Ragamala series tentatively attributed to the Northern Deccan in the middle decades of the seventeenth century. With its vibrant palette and strong forms it may relate to other paintings from the Northern Deccan, such as the Tarif-i Husain Shahi of circa 1565 and a Ragamala painting of the second half of the seventeenth century (see Zebrowski 1983, pl.I, fig.38), but Mewar has also been suggested (see Fantoni 1999, p.48), as well as links to Malwa and Bijapur (Losty 2008, p.56). Other examples of this series are published as follows: Glynn, Skelton and Dallapiccola 2011, no.16, pp.70-71;  Losty 2008, no.22, pp.56-57; Fantoni 1999, nos.29-31, pp.48-51; Fogg and Miller 1996, no.86, pp.84-85.

The inscription names the raga as Kamala (Lotus) Raga of Raga Hindol. The lotus of this mode is represented here by the garment worn by the male figure, which is made entirely of lotus flowers, and the large lotus in his hand.
