Catalogue Note
Born in Istanbul, Ahmed Muharrem Efendi, better known as Hafiz Ahmed, lived in the Kasim Pasha district. He studied thuluth and naskh scripts under the supervision of Halil Efendi and was celebrated for his mastery in these scripts. He knew the Qur'an by heart, and so was therefore called Hafiz Ahmed. His son Abdulkerim Efendi was also a calligrapher. He died in Istanbul in 1722. For more on the calligrapher, see Suleyman Sa'd al-Din Efendi, Tuhfe-i Hattatin, Istanbul, 1985, p.100.
