Catalogue Note

Ali Shukri of Galata

Born in Istanbul, Ali Shukri Efendi was from the Galata district as indicated by the colophon of the present manuscript ('Ali Shukri ‘Galatawi’). He was the Imam of the imperial treasury of the Topkapi Palace. Two Qur’an manuscripts copied by him are preserved in the Topkapi Palace Museum, the first dated 1246 AH/1830 AD and the second 1250 AH/1834 AD. The present juz is the only other work by the calligrapher known to us.
