Catalogue Note

Shamsas, or illuminated medallions (from the Arabic word meaning 'sun') such as that seen in the present leaf were frequently executed at the opening of lavishly-illuminated manuscripts, often comprising dedications to distinguished patrons. This example, however, contains invocations to God, Muhammad and 'Ali, and is surrounded by text from a Mathnawi. A related album page incorporating a shamsa was sold in these rooms 28 April 2004, lot 31.
