Purchased Sotheby's London, 15 October 1997, lot 41

Measurements 133m wide across the top, 130cm. across the bottom, 188cm long left side, 200cm long right side.
Dense pile, wool foundation, robust weave. Red field is abrashed in bands and slightly copper red band with oxidisation to knot bars, remainder of pile generally 2-4mm. Original side cords and soumakh end finishes mainly extant. Some losses to braiding in central lower end finishes, with vestiges of fringing and very minor repairs to corners (strengthening). Unusual design and irregular shape but lies flat. Charming chequerboard outlining to boteh.
Specialist Comment:
This is typical of later 19th century Bidjar production and its densely packed weave. This makes these rugs very hardwearing and versatile. The design of this piece however is quite unusual with its open design of angular vines and flowers, reminiscent of Heriz carpets. The boteh with their chequerborad surround and the flecked pile in the central petals is extremely unusual.
EMBARGO ON IMPORTATION OF PERSIAN/IRANIAN WORKS OF ART TO THE USA.
