Catalogue Note
inscriptions
Around the neck:
‘izz li-mawlana al-sulta[n] al-malik / a …. a/l-‘amil al-‘alim al-‘amil (?)/al-ghazi al-mujahid al-dunya wa [a]l-d[i]n sha’ban
‘Glory to our lord, the Sultan the King, ….. the Diligent, the Learned, the Diligent (?), the Warrior, the Holy warrior of the World and Religion, Sha’ban’
In the cartouches on the body:
‘izz li-mawla/na al-sulta[n] al-malik / al-ghazi al-mujahid al-du/nya [wa a] l-d[i]n sha’ban
‘Glory to our lord, the Sultan the King the Warrior, the Holy warrior of the World and religion, Sha’ban’
The interesting feature of this lota lies in its mixture of Mamluk-style inscriptions with Indian motifs, engraved on a typically Indian form. Whereas the inscriptions probably refer to either the Mamluk Sultans Sayf al-Din Sha'ban (r. 1345-46) or Zayn al-Din Sha'ban (r.1363-76), as they contain slight inaccuracies, one must assume that this piece was made in India for the Egyptian market.
