12-inch dial with rococo spandrels, matted centre with seconds dial, the arch with subsidiary regulation and strike/silent dials and signed on a recessed plaque Ayns:th Thwaites, London, the massive three train movement with six knopped pillars and six spoke wheels, deadbeat escapement with maintaining power, quarter chiming on a nest of eight bells and striking on a further bell, the case with concave-sided cresting above a frieze fret and brass-capped stop fluted pillars, shaped trunk door and panelled plinth both flanked by stop-fluted pilasters

Dial in good condition. Movement is complete and ust running at time of cataloguing but is extremely dirty and will require cleaning and service. Case lacking finials, cresting fret replaced with glass panel, losses to cresting mouldings, hood frieze fret proably replaced, brass cappings lacking from rear hood pilasters, upper cappings lacking from trunk pilasters and left plinth pilaster, other very minor scuffs and marks but otherwise good. With pendulum, three brass-cased weights and winder but no case keys.

Aynsworth Thwaites was apprenticed in 1735 and was made Free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1751 founding his business in Rosoman Row, Clerkenwell. He was father of John Thwaites who went on to form the world renowned firm of Thwaites & Reed.
