Description

  • Stained fruitwood, brass, steel, glass
  • 74cm. 29in. high
8-inch replaced painted dial signed Paul Rimbault, London, enamel subsidiary date and tune selection dials set on a flower painted surround, with an automaton scene in the ogee arch of four musicians, strike/silent lever at III, the substantial three train fusee and chain movement with eight knopped pillars, later conversion to anchor escapement, striking on a bell, a pinned cylinder playing one of twelve tunes at the hour or at will on a carrilon of twelve bells with twenty two hammers, the formerly ebonised case with bell top inset with pierced brass frets, ball finials above caryatid corner mounts, on bracket feet

Condition

Dial replaced and now painted, enamel subsidiary dial in good condition, painting rather dirty, musician's automaton arms replaced. Movement is complete and appears to run but is very much in need of a clean, conversion to anchor escapement. Case was formerly ebonised and is now stained to resemble mahogany, top loose, and frets probably replaced, old cracks throughout. With pendulum but no winder or case key.
