circular, the central and eight side panels engraved with urns, dragons and arabesques within silver-gilt cagework mounts applied with female caryatids enamelled en ronde bosse and supporting baskets of fruit, between masks and gryphons within pearl and garnet-set scrollwork, on cast garland and scroll supports, maker's mark, Vienna post-1872 town marks

Condition

Bright and cheerful enamelling with good quality engraving on crystal. The flesh-coloured enamel appears to have suffered firing problems which give it a somewhat freckled look. There are also minor enamel losses throughout. The dish would benefit from professional cleaning.

Catalogue Note

Karl Bender, who is recorded in 1892 as having specialised in gold and silver art works and those in enamel and hardstone, worked in Vienna between 1874 and 1892 after training (1836-1842) with the Vienna goldsmith Germann Leuchter (also known as Hermann Leichter).
