Description
- A Viennese ivory, enamel and silver cabinet, attributed to Hermann Böhm, Vienna, late 19th century
- silver, ivory, enamel
- 39.5 cm., 15 1/2 in. wide ; 41 cm., 16 1/8 in. high, with two original keys and later velvet stand
the arched rectangular cabinet veneered overall in ivory, the front with opening doors revealing 3 inner drawers, flanked by and surmounting further drawers, each available surface richly applied with enamel plaques painted with classical subjects and scrolling foliage or applied with pierced and chased silver appliques enamelled en ronde bosse with figures among inhabited scrollwork, those on the top further set with coloured pastes, each corner with a lapis lazuli veneered column below a silver bird, the upper part, with concealed secret compartment, set with a watch movement and surmounted by an enamelled silver cinquecento group of a princely pair resting with their faithful hound, flanked by musicians, apparently unmarked
Condition
Generally in very good order. The painted enamel plaques are all in good order with no restoration; that on the left side has almost invisible 3 hairline cracks to the upper edge. The enamelled silver work is also in very good order with only very minor losses. The two silver cockerels at the back are probably replacements. The ivory veneer has a number of time cracks most on the upper side sections, visible in the catalogue image. There are also a number of cracks where portions of the ivory veneer have then been re-attached. Small missing portions (particularly at the four base corners) have been tactfully filled in. A small section on the top surface of the right-hand front door is lacking. The general effect, however, is sumptuous. Detailed images of all sections are available on request.
