Catalogue Note
Martin Mortimer, The English Glass Chandelier, 2000, pl. 83 illustrates a cut-glass chandelier with hurricane shades and notes that chandeliers most likely made for the Indian market were fitted with hurricane shades. Indeed Amin Jaffer, in Furniture from British India and Ceylon, A catalogue of the collections in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum, 2001, pl.12-13, illustrates two watercolour views of Indian Colonial interiors showing such chandeliers. It therefore seems likely that the present chandelier was made for such a market.
