Catalogue Note

The present cellaret relates to a design for a cellaret by Robert Adam for Kenwood House, shown illustrated Peter Ward-Jackson, English Furniture Designs of the Eighteenth century, London, 1984, pl. 229 and also pl.233 which shows another design for a cellaret for Osterley Park.

For comparison, a similar wine-cooler can be seen in a photograph of the interior of 8 Ely Place, Dublin,  Irish Georgian Society, 1911, vol. II, pl. CI., which suggests that the present lot could also be of Irish origin and manufacture.

For further comparison see Christie`s London, The Legend of Dick Turpin Part I, 9th March 2006, lot 247 for a very similar cellaret, sold £27,600 incl. premium.
