Description

  • 24.1cm., 9 1/2 in. diam.
finely decorated in gold and platinum against a black ground, with a central scene of three oriental figures gathered around a table with a further figure holding a parasol beneath a trellis arch,  the rim decorated with three chinoiserie vignettes of figures and pagodas within two gilt bands, shield mark in underglaze-blue, impressed date numeral 814, white ware turner's numeral 32, painter's numeral.

Condition

The plate is in good condition. There is a minute area of rubbing to the gilding under the figure to the right of the central scene.

Catalogue Note

This form of decoration with the combination of gilding and platinum was introduced at Sèvres in the early 1790s, two cabinet plates decorated in this manner with date codes for 1791 are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, acc. nos. 62.165.1 and 62.165.3. Forms of this decoration appear in the same year in Vienna cabinet ware, examples are illustrated by Elisabeth Sturm-Bednarczyk, Cladia Jobst, Vienna Porcelain of the Neo-classical Period, 2000, p. 82.
