Catalogue Note
Jean Demosthène Dugourc ( 1749-1825) was one of the principal designers responsible for forming the late Louis XVI style. A pair of period candlesticks of similar form can be seen in the Wallace Collection, London, illustrated in F.J.B. Watson, Wallace Collection Catalogues, Furniture, pl.22, F 174. In the addenda to the catalogue, Francis Watson draws attention to a design for these candlesticks in an album of watercolours (Musée des Arts Décoratifs) attributed to Dugourc for furniture for Madame Elizabeth de France and the Comte de Provence, dated circa 1789.
