A pair of Italian mother-of-pearl inlaid painted and parcel-gilt candlesticks, Venetian early 18th century

- each 69cm. high; 2ft. 3in.
each with a composite flaring baluster stem on a triform base and scrolled feet, the whole carved with seraphim, scrolled acanthus and inlaid with foliate motifs, painted to simulate walnut
Condition
In overall good conserevd condition. Colour darker overall than in the catalogue with wear to gilding and loss of detail to some of the painted decoration and minor chips as visible in the catalogue photograph. Both formerly drilled and fitted for electricity. Some of the mother of pearl has been replaced. There is a restored break in the neck of one where it meets the stem and above it a small roundel is missing the mother of pearl. Some retouching to the silvered decoration. The other has a scrolled foot replaced and two feet have small sections recarved. The underside of one has been filled with a grey metallic substance and two roundels of mother of pearl are missing. On the same one there is a smallish hole in the neck of one nozzle. Evidence of old worm which appears to be no longer active.
