Condition
Colour matching to catalogue is good.
Good overall condition. A few streaks on the black areas in the background and a few marks in the grey areas, probably due to oxydizing of the laquer. A silvery grey deposit on the lower edge on the left, visible on catalogue illustration. Some very minor dents and wear to the frame and supporting structure. Please note that the black frame lifts out from the structure very easily.
An extraordinary rich and luxurious unique piece, one of the few collaborative works between Dunand and Goulden, that has been in the Goulden family since 1921.

The design for this fire screen is from Jean Goulden’s painting which was reproduced as ‘La skite de Panteleimon’ in Salonique, la Macédoine, l’Athos, with engravings by F.L. Schmied after Goulden’s works in oil . Dunand and Goulden had used the same design for a large lacquered and moulded stucco panel (250 x 140 cm) which was exhibited at the Galerie George Petit in 1921, n. 6 (Marcilhac, op. cit. p. 232, n. 289).
The present fire screen is one of only six documented pieces of furniture on which Goulden and Dunand collaborated between 1921 and 1930, the majority of which were for the artist’s personal use or were offered to his wife.
