Condition

The Virgin's proper right hand restored and her proper left toe tips partly restored. One fine fissure to the Christ's proper right arm around the elbow, toe tips of his proper right foot restored. Overall good condition with remains of original polychromy and some retouch to the paint.

Catalogue Note

Cette belle Pietà en terre cuite polychrome est tout à fait caractéristique des oeuvres des sculpteurs de la région de Bologne dans le courant du XVIIIe siècle et notamment d'artistes tel que Giuseppe Mazza (1653-1741). Le traitement vigoureux des drapés en plis nerveux souligne l'expressivité des gestes et l'émotion du sujet.
