Ces statues reprennent celles figurant aux portes du palais royal de Naples, cadeau du star de Russie Nicolas I au roi de Naples Ferdinand II, oeuvre du sculpteur Peter Clodt von Jürgensburg. Le tsar en commanda deux autres groupes dont un orne le pont Anichkov à Saint-Pétersbourg.
