Condition

The illustration is accurate. Good overall condition despite the inevitable scratches and marks throughout due to age and use. The base has been restored with some small visible cracks. The body has been restored too but only visible to a very close examination.

Catalogue Note

Par son profil harmonieux et son dépouillement sophistiqué, ce vase rappelle la paire de vases étrusques du duc d'Aumont, aujourd'hui conservée au Louvre : la virtuosité de la taille et l'absence totale d'ornements souligne la beauté du porphyre et lui confère "l'élégante simplicité" et "l'austérité raffinée" que recherchaient alors les Antiquaires ou amateurs éclairés du XVIIIe siècle (cf. Ph. Malgouyres, Porphyre, cat. expo., Paris, 2003, n°68, pp.176-177).
