Condition
Very good condition overall with a few firing cracks and few minor chips to edges and to the tips of the curls consistent with age and handling. Some surface dirt, especially on the crevices.
At the back of the head, a vertical recess and a hole which were probably meant to secure the bust or to hold a headgear.

Ce portait d’homme, les yeux surmontés d'épais sourcils légèrement froncés, le nez proéminent et la bouche entrouverte sur une dentition clairsemée, oscille entre la tête d'expression ou la tête de caractère. Le sculpteur a pu s'inspirer de nombreux dessins d’artistes, dont Albrecht Dürer ou Hendrik Goltzius à la Renaissance et Nicolas Poussin et Charles Le Brun au XVIIe siècle, qui se passionnèrent pour la physiognomonie. Dans sa conférence sur l’Expression de l’Ame, Le Brun explique comment les traits d’un visage sont le reflet de l’expression des passions. Les quatre Tempéraments issus de la Théorie des Humeurs et traités par Le Brun - le Colérique, le Flegmatique, le Sanguin et le Mélancolique - peuvent être rapprochés d’autres thèmes, tels que les Ages de la Vie, les Saisons ou les Eléments, permettant à l’artiste de représenter à la limite de l’outrance les particularismes physiques.
