Catalogue Note

The miniature is based on a portrait of the sitter (now in St Petersburg, Hermitage) painted by the English artist George Dawe in 1821, when Nicholas was still Grand Duke.  The youngest of two brothers, Nicholas was born to Emperor Paul I and Empress Maria Fedorovna. he was not brought up to become the Emperor of Russia, but when his brother Alexander I died suddenly of typhus in 1825, he became Nicholas I. A reactionary tsar, the Russian Empire however reached its geographical zenith, spanning over 20 million km2.
