Condition

The bronze has an overall black waxed patina with minor surface wear. Various surface scratches on the body and chest of the Centaur. Good condition overall.

Catalogue Note

Puisée des Métamorphoses d'Ovide, l'histoire relate la tentative d'enlèvement de Déjanire par le centaure Nessus. Ce dernier ayant échoué, il est mortellement blessé par une flèche empoisonnée décochée par Hercule venu au secours de son épouse. Un bronze identique au nôtre, attribué à un artiste actif à la cour de l'Empereur Rodolphe II, est conservé à la Galerie Nationale de Prague (inv. n° I.N. P5815, cf. op.cit.).
