Catalogue Note
Selon Viaro (in RMN, Sculptures, 2000, p. 230), la qualité des statues adu - effigies de défunts - dépendait de l'importance du mort. Ici, la figuration des ornements en or - haute coiffe à décor de fougère, boucle d'oreilles sur le côté droit, collier torsadé et bracelet porté au poignet droit - signifie la richesse et la très haute position sociale du défunt, probablement un adu siraha salawa, soit un chef de village. Son style naturaliste et la grande finesse des modelés la rattachent à la statuaire de la région centre de l'île de Nias. Très rares sont les statues adu dont les mains reposent sur les genoux. Le musée de Leiden en possède deux, dont l'une, colletée par Schröder, entra dans les collections du musée en 1907.
