Under naked eyes: the painting appears in very good condition. It is on its original canvas. A small patch is visible at the center reverse. Some strengthening strips have been added along the edges of the canvas. At the front, the material is thin by places especially in the head of the man at the upper right hand edge. Under UV light: A small repaint is visible where the patch is located. three tiny retouches are visible , one in the left hand part of the sky, one in the right hand bottom at the foreground and one in the lower left hand corner. Very good condition

Notre tableau est probablement le volet gauche d'un important triptyque réalisé par Bridgman pour l'Exposition Universelle de 1889, titré Le pirate d'amour (voir illustration ci-dessous). Il s'agit d'une pièce unique dans l'oeuvre de Bridgman par sa composition et sa taille. Notre tableau, qui décrit la première phase d'une composition en trois parties, présente une beauté alanguie à la lueur du soir, un homme apparaît dans le coin droit de la composition, l'espionnant derrière un muret. La partie centrale représente la même beauté attaquée violemment par le même homme (voir l'illustration ci dessous) et la partie droite (localisation actuelle inconnue) la présente allongée au sol avec une dague à ses pieds, dont elle s'est servie pour se donner la mort.
Lors des deux expositions à New York et Chicago en 1890, le tableau reçut un accueil négatif de la part du public américain, indigné par l'absence de morale et la soi-disant indécence de la composition.
Blessé par la controverse que son œuvre suscita, l'artiste démantela probablement le triptyque peu après les deux expositions américaines.
