Condition

The painting is on its original canvas and appears in good condition. Under UV light a thick green varnish is visible over the surface and some old cracks have been filed in especially in the background. some small filed in cracks in the chest of the woman and in the bear of the man Good overall condition

Catalogue Note

Il s'agit d'une des compositions les plus célèbres de Paul Emil Jacobs. La première version fut exécutée en 1840 à Rome, suite à la commande du roi de Württemberg. Plusieurs versions suivirent ainsi que des gravures. 
Le tableau représente Kira Vassiliki, la favorite grecque et chrétienne de Ali Pacha (1789 -1834), gouverneur de Loannina en Grèce, présenté à ses côtés dans le tableau. Son influence sur le souverain permit de sauver la vie de nombreux chrétiens grecs. Ali Pacha était une figure très connue du monde occidental, dont la vie tumultueuse et romanesque inspira Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas et Balzac. De nombreux peintres philhellènes représentèrent l'histoire d'amour entre Kira Vassiliki et Ali Pacha.
