Catalogue Note

It was at the Café de Flore, in Paris, in the late 1940s, that Fernand Léger first met Marion Lowndes. She and her husband were part of a group of wealthy American expatriates, the last representatives of the 'Grand Tour' tradition begun in the 19th Century by the English Romantic poets, who divided their time between Paris and the French Riviera. Marion Lowndes and Léger became close friends. They would see each other at the parties organised by Gerald and Sarah Murphy, the eminent members of this community immortalised by F. Scott Fitzgerald in Tender is the Night(1934). It is in memory of these soirées that the artist gave this work to his friend as a gift.
