Catalogue Note

RARE PHOTOGRAPHS including over 20 views of Ghats in Benares, the Maharaja's fort, the Golden Temple, the Town Hall (built in 1870), the college, the monkey temple, the Maharaja's fort at Ramnagar, and buildings in Chakia.
E.J. Lazarus & Co. were publishers in Benares from around 1860 through to the 1920s; it is possible that these photographs were taken by the publisher. E.J. Lazarus might be connected to Charles Lazarus of Calcutta, who was a member of the Photographic Society of Bengal, and who took part in their exhibition of 4th March 1857, along with Linnaeus Tripe, Dr John Murray and others.
