Description

  • silver gilt
curvilinear and of zoomorphic form with a makara-head from whose jaw emerges a stylised gazelle, with fine silver net enclosing the body

Condition

In good overall condition, some minor oxidisation to surface, the foil-backing behind clear stones set on eyes and head, as viewed.

A similar powder flask, designed as a tiger attacking an elephant, with a silver wire netting like on the present example, attributed to Rajasthan, is illustrated in R. Hales, Islamic and Oriental Arms and Armour: A Lifetime's Passion, p.251, no.611. Similar flasks are on display in the Jaipur City Palace Museum.
