Catalogue Note
Previously these paintings were identified as Ragamalas from Malwa or Malpura, however recent research by Dr N.P. Upadhaya identifies these illustrations as representations of jatmalas (garlands of cast) produced during the eighteenth century in Bundelkhand. The eminent Hindi poet Dev composed a book describing different women belonging to different casts. Regional poets then wrote couplets describing the features of these women. These Bundelkhandi jatmala illustrations typically display three registers; with Radha and Krishna at the top, an activity in the middle and a device in the lower section. In the present illustration Kunjarin is identified by the inscription in the top left corner. Kunjarin is the wife of a low cast vegetable seller, the couplet describes her as ill tongued and cunning, and that when she takes your hand in her hand she steals your heart.
