Catalogue Note

The thikana of Devgarh was ruled by the descendants of the Ranas of Udaipur and was a powerful  fiefdom situated in the Aravalli hills. During the eighteenth and early ninteenth century Bakhta and his son Chokha were instrumental in developing the distinctive Devgarh style, characterised by stocky figures and a rich palette. Stylistically this painting relates to the work of Chokha and his followers. Here Maharana Bhim Singh (r.1778-1828) is depicted alongside a consort; Maharana Bhim Singh is believed to have fathered more than a hundred children.
