Catalogue Note

According to an ancient text, Gujari was a sixteen-year old girl who composed music whilst waiting for her lover. A further Ragamala scene (Dipaka Raga) from the same series as the present painting is in the India Office Library (see Falk and Archer 1981, p.132 and 430, no.231). Various other examples of Gujari Ragini can be found in K. Ebeling, Ragamala Painting, Basel, Paris, New Delhi, 1973, where Gujari is often depicted, as in this example, sitting on a pad of leaves.
