Description

  • silver and enamel
in three sections, the base with four bud form compartments with hinged lids around a central lime paste container, a fitted flat tray in middle section with dome-shaped top leading to a pointed lid decorated with leaves, decorated throughout in dark blue, light blue, green, bordeaux and yellow enamels with a design of birds and floral motifs

Provenance

Ex-collection Han Coray, Casa Coray, Agnuzzo. Han Coray was a Swiss educational reformer and art collector, with particular interests in African art, Dadaism and the avant-garde.

Condition

Some losses to enamel decoration and minor dents in metal, including some areas with thin cracks in the metal, hinged repaired, as viewed.

A very similar betel box with tray and dome-shaped lid, decorated in enamels dominated by the colour blue with a design featuring birds within a floral background is in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (inv. no.AC1993.137.1.1-.2, published in S. Markel and T.B. Gude et al, India's Fabled City: The Art of Courtly Lucknow, Los Angeles, 2010, p.204, no.86).
