Catalogue Note

The production of globular glass huqqa bases in India began at the end of the seventeenth century, and coincided with the recent introduction of tobacco into the Mughal empire at the begining of the century and its subsequent popularity. This huqqa base was decorated with gilt-floral stems, and relates to an example in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, inv. no. IM.15-1930. For an analogous design in silver on a bidriware huqqa base, see the previous lot.
