Catalogue Note

This scene was painted in nineteenth-century India in the Company School style, a phrase coined to describe the Indo-European style that many artists in major tourist cities adopted when painting for their European patrons. In this painting, a body of water is surrounded by white European-style buildings. On the left side ladies in bright clothing watch as the Indian God Vishnu sits in a boat and is serenaded by female musicians while on the other side of the lake a prince in a chariot is welcomed onto a boat by three female attendants.
