Description

  • An Egyptian Limestone Stele

  • 19 7/16 by 8 1/4 in. 49.9 by 21 cm.
of rectangular form carved in sunk relief within a naos with a youth reclining on the couch and holding a kantharos in his extended right hand, a bouquet of flowers, pointed amphora on stand, and tripod table supporting two cups below, inscribed horizontal lines underneath dividing a painted Greek funerary inscription, now lost; traces of black, red, and mustard-yellow pigment.

Condition

As shown and described, sides and reverse unfinished. Dots of blackish pigment on front surface, mostly at top. Scattered chips, scratches, and abrasions.
