Description

  • An Apulian Red-Figured Column Krater, attributed to the Painter of Bari 898
  • terracotta
  • Height 16 in. 40.6 cm.
painted with winged Eros seated and holding a vessel containing a large cake, a maenad facing him holding a situla and thyrsos, an Ionic altar in between them, two conversing youths on the reverse, the details in added white, yellow, and brown.

Condition

Good and intact. Note abrasions to glaze and added colors in certain areas. There are large areas of incrustation remaining on the inside of the neck and top of the rim. The decoration on the edge and especially the top of the rim is worn and incrusted in areas. A short superficial firing crack under the rim on the reverse. A superficial crack goes around one column of the handle on the left.
